Dealing with strong emotions

Many clients find themselves dealing with strong emotions – their own, and those of others. They find themselves dealing with ‘people behaving badly.’ Troubling behaviors like impatience, aggression, a lack of courtesy, cooperation, consideration, are going unaddressed, and having a negative impact on morale in the workplace.

As a leader, what can you do to address these unproductive dynamics and elevate the emotional operating states of the men and women you lead? Your guidance and constructive words of encouragement mean more than you may realize.

One piece of this puzzle is to provide a sense of calm reassurance… something like: ‘I know how difficult these past months have been for you individually and for us as an organization. We are all a little frayed at the edges. Let’s work together, not against each other. I don’t have all the answers we need, but I have faith in us. Working together we can figure out the answers to the challenges are facing.’ Your calm reassurance and guidance will point everyone in the direction of finding better, more constructive ways to go forward together.

Which bring us to another important piece of the puzzle, to provide a sense of hope and human connection; to communicate a sense that ‘We’re all in this together, and by pulling together we can, and we will come out of this time in ways we can really feel proud of.’

It is important for each of us to remember, that in facing our most daunting challenges constructively, our strength and resilience can come forth in truly transformative ways.
